So what do you invest in?

So what do you invest in?

This is a question I get from clients from time to time. But I think almost all are thinking it but are too polite to ask. It goes like this..

“We have had three meetings, you have put together pages of recommendations and advice – and now you want me to invest in XYZ, take out insurance, get my Wills done and put money into superannuation. But before I sign on the dotted line, tell me Reuben  have you done the same thing yourself?”.

This is a legitimate question and the answer is (with some caveats) YES. I do use many of the same investments as my clients, take out similar insurance policies on my (and my wife’s) life, get Wills and Powers of Attorney, pay down  personal debt and put as much into super as I can. The caveat is that your life and financial situation is most likely different to mine. You may be older or younger than me, have different preferences,  timeframes and tolerance for risk . So it may be that I recommend something for you that I don’t have or vica versa.

It is kind of like going to a Doctor who prescribes you medication for your condition. The Doctor is unlikely  to be taking the same treatment himself at that time. But you would hope that if he or a family member had your condition, that he would recommend the same thing. Just like you would expect your personal trainer to keep fit and watch what they eat! It’s similar with financial advice

But hey if you are still unsure, you can just ask me the question. I promise not to be offended!
